Mono White Soldiers

Postby Stomphoof » Sun Mar 14, 2010 10:31 am

So yesterday I found I had enough cards to build 2 decks, and I now have a RG deck (built to be fast) and a Mono White deck that is, for the most part, Soldiers. I say for the most part because I have 4 Serra Angels in it right now.

But upon looking I found I could possibly build a solid Mono White Soldier deck, so I dug around and came up with the following:

4 Hada Freeblade
4 Kazandu Blademaster
4 Kor Aeronaut
2 Kor Firewalker
2 Veteran Armorsmith
2 Captain of the Watch
2 Veteran Swordsmith
2 Rhox Pikemaster
2 Kor Hookmaster

1 Ajani Goldmane
1 Honor of the Pure
1 Marshals Anthem
3 Join the Ranks
3 Journey to Nowhere
3 Conquerors Pledge
2 Kitesail

22 Plains

And for the most part I have everything I need. In fact, all I am missing is:

2 Kazandu Blademaster
2 Rox Pikemaster
4 Kor Aeronaut
2 Captain of the Watch
1 Veteran Swordsmith
2 Conqueror's Pledge

Which is not much at all. Any thoughts or suggestions?

The creature base looks extremely powerful, but the non-creatures...

I think there are a couple of cards in there that will just not help you in any significant way. Kitesail is the kind of card you want to run in green, where your fatties all lack evasion. Join the ranks is pretty cute, but I don't think you have enough allies to play it instead of cards like Raise the Alarm or [mtg]Militia's Pride[/mtg], which fill a similar role, but are more mana efficient or stronger if you don't have any of your 8 allies in play.

Other than that...You're low on removal and combat tricks. As it stands now, the deck will die to cards like propaganda, or ensnaring bridge. A couple oblivion rings wouldn't hurt. Or Sword to Plowshares and its many variants.

Oh, and Brave the Elements. Or [mtg]Veteran's Armaments[/mtg].

more Firewalkers if you can get them. That card is ridiculous good, and is only an Uncommon.

The Hookmaster is ok when you combo with the Kor Skyfisher so you can cast it again, but it's still just a tapper. I took them out of my Kor equipment deck because some of the other Kor seem to perform better, especially as attackers.

At the pre-release that combo was great for me for tapping down their best blocker, but for Extended and casual, other cards work better in that spot for me.

Thought so ;) I feel the same way I just had him in there for Variety.

But there are definitely times when you want to have him, like if you're staring down a Terra Stomper or something. But if it was a choice between drawing him or a Path or a Journey to Nowhere or better yet - O-Ring for the same cost, I'd probably go for the O-Ring.

I would go ahead and have 2-3 Emeria, unless that would make you too worried about fumbling your curve early game.
